Miami's military presence is anchored by U.S. Coast Guard Sector Miami — one of the busiest maritime law enforcement and search-and-rescue commands in the country, responsible for operations across South Florida and the Caribbean. Homestead Air Reserve Base (HARB), located 30 miles south of downtown in Miami-Dade County, is home to the 482nd Fighter Wing flying F-16C/D Fighting Falcons. Together, these installations add to the Miami metro's estimated 100,000+ veterans — many of whom served in other branches and settled in South Florida after separation due to family ties, climate, and economic opportunity.
